Kennel-Free Home Boarding for Your Dog
When you travel, your dog stays in a real home, not a kennel. Comfortable surroundings, familiar routines, and a household your dog can settle into while you’re away.
Tell Us What You Need
Sound Familiar?
Does This Sound Like You?
- A trip or vacation is coming up, and you want something better than a kennel
- Your dog is used to couches, dog beds, and everyday life at home, not cages
- You’d rather your dog stay somewhere small and familiar than a big commercial facility
- You want to feel genuinely comfortable with where your dog is staying while you’re gone
The Solution
Your Dog Stays in a Real Home While You’re Away
Kennel-free boarding means exactly that. Your dog spends their stay in our home, not a kennel or cage, with the comforts and routine of everyday household life. We get to know your dog’s habits and needs so their time with us feels less like being boarded and more like staying somewhere familiar.
What to Expect
What Home Boarding Looks Like
Your dog settles into our home the way they would at yours. Depending on the dog, that might mean curling up on a couch, resting in one of the dog beds we keep around the house, or sleeping in a human bed. Some dogs do best in a crate, and we’re glad to keep that part of their routine if crating is already familiar and comfortable for them and doesn’t disrupt the household. We build each stay around what works for your dog.
Is This a Fit?
Is Home Boarding Right for Your Dog?
Because boarding happens in a real home, not every dog is the right fit, and that’s by design. Dogs who board with us need to meet a few basic requirements:
1 Year or Older
Housebroken
Spayed or Neutered
Comfortable Around Other Dogs
Safe Around Cats
Two cats live in our home. Your dog doesn’t need prior experience living with cats, but they do need to be safe and calm around them. If there’s any concern about prey drive or unsafe behavior around cats, this isn’t the right environment, and we’ll talk that through honestly during your Meet & Greet.
A Shared Home
A Small-Scale, Shared Home Environment
Boarding at Wholesome Hounds happens in our actual home, which means your dog may share the space with our resident dogs during their stay. It’s a household, not a facility, and we keep it that way on purpose so every dog gets genuine attention rather than getting lost in a crowd.
Why Wholesome Hounds

Frequently Asked Questions
Where will my dog sleep?
Depending on the dog, that might be a couch, one of our dog beds, or a human bed. Dogs who are already comfortable being crated can keep that part of their routine too.
Will my dog be crated?
Only if crating is already a normal, comfortable part of your dog’s routine and it doesn’t disrupt the household. It isn’t required for every dog.
Will other dogs be there?
Yes. Boarding happens in our home, and your dog may share the space with our resident dogs during their stay.
Does my dog need to be good with cats?
Yes. Two cats live in our home, so your dog needs to be safe and calm around them. Prior experience with cats isn’t required, but any concerns about prey drive or unsafe behavior would mean this isn’t the right fit.
Is a Meet & Greet required?
Yes. A Meet & Greet is required before boarding begins.
Is a trial stay required?
Not for every dog. If questions about fit remain after the Meet & Greet, we may recommend a trial before a longer boarding stay.
What dogs are eligible for boarding?
Dogs must be at least 1 year old, housebroken, spayed or neutered, comfortable around other dogs, and safe around cats.
Do I need to live in your regular service area?
No. Boarding takes place in our home in Hudson, Massachusetts, so boarding clients do not need to live within our regular dog walking and drop-in service area. You’ll bring your dog to us for their stay and pick them up when you return.
